BACKGROUND OF THE LEONARD VICTOR COMPETITION ******************************************** Leonard Victor was the photo editor Newsday in the 1960’s. In 1969 he, along with Walter Rossi, Hank DeRossi, Mel Ettinger, Nick Manly, and Connie Lazuta formed the “Long Island Council of Camera Clubs”. In 1971 the name was changed to the “Photographic Federation of Long Island”. The Councils purpose was to help the growing number of Camera Clubs on Long Island share information and the cost of inviting speakers and to attract new members. To promote the idea Mr. Victor was very active in getting Camera Club activities included in the Newspapers on Long Island, especially Newsday. Leonard Victor died just before the first End of Year Competition and it was decided to name the competition the “Leonard Victor Memorial Competition” in his honor. He was hard old style judge who always wished for Long Island Photographers to excel and he is why the Federation exists today.
